At Darong Village in Fenglin Township, the Hualien River runs between the village and the mountains. Over 30 years ago, the only way of crossing this river was by use of a makeshift bamboo bridge. In the summer of 1977, the bridge was destroyed by flooding due to a typhoon. At that time, director Chen Guoyi, and teachers Zhang Jian, Deng Yu-ying and Lin Bao-syuan, who were employed in the mountain and elementary school services, needed to cross the river to go to the school. Due to the rapids, they decided to cross hand in hands. Unfortunately, they lost their footing, and teachers Jhang Jian and Deng Yu-ying were sadly drowned in the line of duty.
This event deeply moved the whole nation, and everyone desired to show gratitude to the dedicated sacrifice of the teachers working in this remote area. When Premier Jiang Jing-guo received this news, he decided to allot funds to the building of a large concrete bridge, which would improve transportation and communication between the mountain villages and the outside world. This bridge was named "Jianying Bridge" in honor of teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yu-ying who had sacrificed their lives. Later on, after this story was made into the movie "Jianying Bridge", the names of these two teachers, and the great sacrifice that they made, became a household name, making the Fenglin area even more well-known.
In the memory of teachers Zhang Jian and Deng Yu-ying, Fenglin Township office built Jianying Park in the hills next to the eastern end of the Jianying Bridge. It lies next to Hualien's famous scenic County Road No.193. In the park are two copper memorial statues to cherish the memory of these teachers. This park also provides another good recreation place for the Fonglin area.
