Taste of Native Cuisines, The Journey to Tribes” Returns Yongkang Community Opens the Season with the “Hunter’s Wild Feast under the Moon

Organized by the East Longitudinal Valley National Scenic Area Headquarters, Tourism Administration, MOTC (hereinafter the Valley Headquarters), “Taste of Native Cuisines, The Journey to Tribes” enters its ninth year in 2026. This year’s program is themed “The Red Honor Roll,” celebrating the cultural traditions and distinctive local character that Indigenous communities across the East Longitudinal Valley take pride in.
Opening the season is the “Hunter’s Wild Feast under the Moon” presented by Yongkang Community in Taitung County. Taking place on October 3 and 4, the experience leads travelers into a secluded mountain setting on Mt. Yongling, overlooking the East Longitudinal Valley. From exploring hunting trails and learning Bunun hunting knowledge to enjoying an evening feast in the mountains, the program offers an immersive journey into the Bunun way of life. Each session is limited to just 30 participants, drawing strong interest from travelers seeking meaningful cultural experiences.
Director Tsung-Min Hsu noted that, over the past nine years, “Taste of Native Cuisines, The Journey to Tribes” has grown into one of eastern Taiwan’s signature cultural travel experiences for visitors. This year Yongkang Community, as the first featured destination of the season, shows an outstanding example of Bunun perspectives on the mountains, the land, and hospitality. Visitors can not only enjoy extraordinary views across the valley but also discover the cultural stories behind each dish. By bringing together the natural environment and the transmission of living traditions, the experience presents a distinctive model of immersive cultural travel.
The Hunter’s Wild Feast under the Moon takes place at an elevation of approximately 930 meters on Mt. Yongling, where Uninang Multicultural Workshop has transformed the mountainside by hand and constructed a bamboo shelter using locally sourced materials.
The journey begins in the afternoon. Led by Bunun hunters, participants first pay their respects to ancestral spirits in accordance with Bunun tradition before entering the mountain trails. Along the way, they learn to identify local plants and wildlife while gaining insight into Bunun hunting practices, codes of conduct, and cultural taboos. Participants can also try traditional outdoor skills such as archery and spear throwing.
The group then gathers together to experience Pasibutbut, the Bunun prayer for a bountiful millet harvest renowned for its powerful eight-part polyphony, followed by Malastapan, traditional recountings of hunting achievements. Through these living traditions, visitors encounter the deep connections between the Bunun people, the land, and the natural world.
As evening approaches, participants arrive at the mountaintop dining area, where panoramic views stretch across the East Longitudinal Valley. Dinner begins with classic Bunun smoked meat, followed by fire-grilled meat skewers, millet rice with salted fish, locally gathered wild greens, pigeon pea and pork rib soup, and Latantan, a dessert made by slowly simmering corn.
Accompanied by traditional songs, guests discover the stories and cultural memories carried within each dish. To conclude the evening, everyone takes part in pounding freshly made turmeric millet mochi in a stone mortar, bringing the mountain feast to a warm and memorable close.
To ensure an intimate and high-quality experience, each session of the Yongkang Community “Hunter’s Wild Feast under the Moon” is limited to 30 participants. The price is NT$2,200 per person, including cultural interpretation, hands-on activities, the signature dinner, dedicated train station transfers, and event insurance. Each participant will also receive a special Yongkang Community signature sauce as a souvenir.
